Nut Free

All products made in our 101a Canarctic Drive facility are produced in a strict dairy, egg, sesame, peanut and nut free environment. Our ingredient suppliers have been audited for their peanut and tree nut free status in order to ensure that all ingredients entering the bakery are nut free. All Treats from the Earth products marked as nut free are school safe. As an added measure of safety, in addition to being a GFSI-FSC2200 and HAACP-certified facility, we periodically test both incoming raw ingredients and outgoing finished baked goods for allergens through a federally accredited food laboratory. This facility uses soy, wheat and gluten.

Gluten Free

All products made in our 101b Canarctic Drive facility are produced in a strict dairy, egg, wheat and gluten free environment. Our ingredient suppliers have been audited for their wheat and gluten free status, and each batch of our custom gluten-free flour blend is tested for the presence of gluten. These strict measures ensure that all of our gluten free products are celiac-friendly. This facility uses sesame, soy, peanuts and tree nuts.

Sugar Free

Treats from the Earth’s family of sugar free treats are made with the same 100% all natural, plant-based quality ingredients you love, but with 0 grams of sugar per serving. And they taste out of this world! Enjoy the perfect combination of taste and nutrition that will satisfy any health conscious sweet tooth. If you follow a keto, paleo, diabetic, vegan, grain free, celiac or gluten free lifestyle, this may be the answer to your sweet prayers!

Our Story

1977 – A 7 year-old girl named Ilana makes a horrifying discovery: The meat she’s being served for dinner came from a real live adorable animal. It was just the day before that her dad went out hunting and a rabbit was the unlucky victim. The thought of eating this beautiful creature is unbearable. She declares herself a vegetarian, and begins learning to cook her way around her meat-eating family.

2000 – After many years of working in health care, Ilana realizes that her true passion lies in the kitchen, and moves to BC to attend pastry school. BC provides the perfect backdrop for training and apprenticeship in the kitchen. She gets a job at a great restaurant where she has access to the best ingredients from around the world and learns that quality ingredients make all the difference.

2002 – Ilana moves back to Toronto to be closer to family and works in a few traditional kitchens. She becomes vegan, and quickly discovers that there’s virtually nowhere to get vegan desserts in the city. She starts experimenting and baking vegan treats out of her apartment, approaching friends and family for feedback. She goes to restaurants and stores with samples, and even leaves a box of samples at a local health food shop, despite being turned away. Ten minutes later, she gets a call from the reluctant owner to place an order, declaring, “they were yummy!” Treats from the Earth is born.

2003 – Ilana moves into a house, and turns the basement into a small commercial kitchen. The rest of the house gets taken over by the growing demand. She sells to local health food stores, restaurants, and cafés.

2005 – Treats from the Earth outgrows the basement and moves into a commercial space on Pacific Avenue, in Toronto’s Junction neighborhood. Ilana hires her first staff, and they begin making a full line of vegan baked goods under one roof.

2007 – Ilana’s dad, living in Montreal, becomes an unofficial sales rep, approaching stores and getting product out to a few retailers in Quebec.

2009 – Shipping to Manitoba begins. Growing demand for vegan and for allergy-friendly products leads to the creation of two separate facilities: gluten free remains on Pacific Avenue and a larger nut free facility opens on Mulock Avenue, in the space of a former fish smokehouse. The staff spends weeks cleaning and scrubbing the place to get it smelling like a bakery.

2010 – Gluten free production moves into a bigger space on Cawthra Avenue, just behind Mulock Avenue.

2012 – More growth means yet another space is required. The nut free facility moves to Canarctic Drive in Toronto’s north end, and the gluten free facility moves to Mulock. Treats from the Earth receives HACCP certification for its food safety procedures.

2013 – Treats from the Earth becomes available coast to coast, from BC to Newfoundland!

2014 – Gluten free production moves in next door to nut free production on Canarctic Drive. Treats from the Earth is named one of the 500 fastest growing companies in Canada, and Ilana is named one of Canada’s Top Female Entrepreneurs.

September 2017 – We are thrilled to announce that, for the fourth consecutive year, we have received the honour of being named one of PROFIT 500 2017 Canada’s Fastest-Growing Companies!

November 2017 – The wait is finally over! For many years, our friends south of the border have been asking us (read: begging) to bring Treats from the Earth products to the U.S.A., and after much waiting, we are thrilled to announce that we have officially launched our sister brand, Treats from the Earth for the US market.

We have partnered up with online specialty retailer Jet.com who is now offering our delicious nut-free and vegan cookies (Chocolate Chip, Double Chocolate, Oatmeal Raisin and S’mores) and our addictive gluten-free and vegan bars (Peppermint Nanaimo, Hello Dolly, and Walnut Brownie), all under the Treats from the Earth banner.

Today – Treats from the Earth remains a family-owned business and maintains two production facilities. Both are dairy-free, and egg-free. One is dedicated peanut- and nut-free and the other is dedicated wheat and gluten free. Products are available in stores across Canada, with new retailers being added all the time. The product line is constantly expanding, often due to suggestions and feedback from valued customers. See ‘Find a Retailer’ to find Treats from the Earth products close to you, and follow the blog, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news!

We owe a huge thanks to our amazing community for joining us on our journey. We hope you’ll continue to be a part of our story!

F.A.Q

A vegan is a person who abstains from ingesting or using any animal products or byproducts (including dairy, eggs, meat, fish, fowl, rennet, and gelatin).

Vegan baked goods are naturally cholesterol and lactose free, and have lower levels of saturated fat. Plus, they can be just as tasty (if not tastier!), they are a compassionate choice, and have a smaller environmental footprint than many traditional baked goods.

Absolutely! Treats from the Earth products are all natural and vegan. Because our products do not contain any animal-derived ingredients, they are naturally cholesterol and lactose free.

Please always remember to check the packaging, as our gluten free bakery at 101 Canarctic Drive uses peanuts and tree nuts.

Organic refers to methods of growing and processing foods that rely on the earth’s natural resources rather than the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Pests and weeds are managed using earth-friendly means such as beneficial insects and mechanical controls. By definition, organic ingredients are not genetically modified.

Over 50% of our ingredients are organic. All of our flours, grains, and sugars, and much of our produce are organic. We hope to become a completely organic bakery in the future.

Our products are sweetened with organic evaporated cane juice, natural brown rice syrup, maple syrup, agave nectar, and fruits such as organic Medjool dates. We do not use any white or brown refined sugars.

No.

Our 101 Canarctic Drive bakery uses unbleached organic wheat flour in our nut free Chocolate Cake and Carrot Cake, and all of our Muffins, Loaves and Cupcakes.

Spelt is an ancient grain that is a relative of wheat. It is more easily digestible by some people who cannot tolerate wheat. Our Nut Free Cookies, Organic Medjool Date Squares, and Nut Free Cheesecakes are all made with spelt.

We primarily use sunflower oil, which is a light tasting oil, with no GMOs, no trans-fats, and low levels of saturated fat. In certain products, we also use other fats, such as coconut oil, palm fruit oil, olive oil, avocado oil, and flax oil.

While we do use palm fruit oil in a few of our products, the oil we use in the majority of our products is sunflower oil. We’ve chosen to use palm fruit oil specifically in a few products, as it gives a particular texture that we cannot get from sunflower oil, or any other vegan, non-hydrogenated source. We are continually searching for alternatives, and experimenting in the kitchen to come up with our own alternatives, and hope to replace the palm fruit oil as soon as we have an acceptable solution. The only organic palm fruit oil we source is single origin and grown in South America (on an existing plantation, not clear cut lands). The farm is Rainforest Alliance certified.

Trans fats result from a chemical process called hydrogenation, which changes a liquid oil, naturally high in unsaturated fatty acids, to a more solid and more saturated form. The greater the degree of hydrogenation, the more saturated the fat becomes. Consumption of trans fats can result in many health problems, including coronary heart disease. All of our products are 100% non-hydrogenated and have 0 trans fats.

GMOs are genetically modified organisms. They are created by combining genes from organisms such as bacteria, viruses or animals with other, often unrelated, species. In Canada, up to 70 percent of the processed foods found in grocery stores contain GMOs. The government requires no long-term testing of GMOs, so it’s impossible to determine what effects they are having. The most common GMOs are found in products containing corn, soy, and canola. Treats from the Earth products do not contain any GMOs.

We use a soy-based cream cheese. None of our products contain casein (milk protein).

Our nut free 101 Canarctic Drive location has received Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) from a global certifying body.

We work out of a commercial space with no storefront, though special orders may be picked up from our office at 101 Canarctic Drive. We distribute mostly through natural food stores, grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants throughout most of Canada. Any items available at stores and restaurants, as well as catering trays and special occasion cakes (including wedding and birthday cakes) may be ordered and picked up directly from our office.
